With fifty years of music and touring behind them, Don Barnes and 38 Special show no signs of slowing down. Their new album MILESTONE is a testament to the fact that these guys know how to make great music.

In an interview with Hard Rock Reviews, Barnes talk about the the making of the album, songwriting, and respect for their fans...

1. This new album is called Milestone. What does that title represent for you and the band?

Don Barnes: The title felt right because it marks a moment where we looked back at everything we’ve done and said, “Alright, what’s the next chapter?” We’ve been at this for decades, and Milestone is both a celebration and a reminder that we’re still pushing forward. It’s a nod to the journey, but also a statement that we’re not done making music that hits hard and means something.

2. How would you describe the overall sound and feel of Milestone?

Barnes: It’s classic .38 Special at the core—big choruses, twin‑guitar punch, and that blend of Southern rock and melodic rock we’ve always been known for. But we didn’t want to just reheat the past. There’s a modern edge in the production, a little more grit in places, and some deeper storytelling. It’s familiar, but it’s got new muscle.

3. What was the creative spark that kicked off the writing process for this album?

Barnes: Honestly, it started during some downtime on the road. We were tossing around riffs and ideas, and a couple of them just had that “album starter” energy. Once we had two or three songs that felt like they belonged together, the rest started falling into place. It was one of those moments where the band chemistry just clicked.

4. How did the band approach songwriting this time around? Anything different from past albums?

Barnes: You know Bill, we opened the doors a little wider. Everyone brought in ideas—full songs, half songs, riffs, even just lyrical themes. We also spent more time in the same room together, which is something we’d gotten away from over the years. That face‑to‑face energy really shaped the record. When you can look someone in the eye and say, “Try this,” the music gets more honest.

5. Were there any songs that changed dramatically from the first demo to the final version?

Barnes: Oh yeah—“Long Road Home” was almost a ballad at first. It had this slow, reflective feel. But when we started playing it live in rehearsal, it naturally picked up tempo and turned into more of an anthem. Sometimes the song tells you what it wants to be, and you just follow it.

6. How did you decide which songs made the final tracklist for Milestone?

Barnes: We had close to 25 ideas on the table. The rule was simple: if it didn’t feel like it could stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with our best material, it didn’t make the cut. We wanted songs that felt alive onstage, songs that carried emotional weight, and songs that represented where we are now. The final tracklist is the group of tunes that checked all those boxes.

7. You’ve always been known for strong hooks and big choruses. Was that a deliberate focus again?

Barnes: Absolutely. That’s part of our DNA. We’ve always believed that a song should grab you and stay with you. We spent a lot of time tightening choruses, making sure every melody had purpose. Even the heavier tracks have that melodic backbone. It’s what we do best.

8. Were there any themes that naturally emerged as the album came together?

Barnes: Resilience kept showing up—starting over, pushing through, finding your footing again. I think that’s just where we are in life. You get older, you’ve seen some things, and you realize how important it is to keep moving. There’s also a lot of gratitude in these songs. Gratitude for the fans, for the road, for the chance to still do this.

9. What was the recording process like? Did you try anything new in the studio?

Barnes: We blended old‑school and new‑school. We tracked a lot of the guitars and drums live to capture that raw energy, but we also used modern tools to layer textures and polish the sound. We weren’t afraid to experiment—different amps, different mic setups, even some subtle synth pads here and there. Nothing that changes who we are, just colors that enhance the picture.

10. Looking back at Milestone, what do you hope fans take away from it?

Barnes: I hope they hear the heart in it. I hope they feel the fire that’s still in this band. And I hope it reminds them why they connected with us in the first place. We made this album with a lot of love, a lot of sweat, and a lot of respect for the people who’ve stuck with us. If it hits them the way it hits us, then we did our job
