In a stunning announcement during the season finale of The Voice on May 20, Kelly Hansen, the longtime lead singer of Foreigner, revealed that he will be stepping down from his role after nearly two decades with the band. In an emotional "passing of the torch" moment, Hansen introduced guitarist Luis Maldonado as his successor, ensuring the band's legacy continues with a fresh voice.
"Being the voice of Foreigner has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Hansen said during the televised event. "But it's time to pass the mic. Luis has the voice, the energy, and the soul to carry these songs into the future. I couldn’t be prouder to hand this off to him".
Maldonado, who has been with Foreigner since 2021, expressed his excitement about stepping into the lead vocalist role. "This music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I'm ready to honor Foreigner's legacy and bring my heart to every performance".
Foreigner founder Mick Jones praised Hansen for his contributions, calling him "one of the best frontmen in our business" and acknowledging his "boundless energy and flawless talent" that helped keep the band's music alive for the past 20 years. Jones also expressed confidence in Maldonado, stating that he has already proven himself as a strong vocalist during the band's South American tour.
Hansen will officially exit the band after their summer 2025 tour, marking the end of an era for Foreigner fans. As the band prepares for its 50th anniversary in 2026, Maldonado will lead the charge into the next chapter of Foreigner’s storied career.
