Trevor Stickel’s bold, dynamic portraits of music legends and cultural icons have won him devoted collectors worldwide. This summer, Stickel brings his renowned work to Austin, Texas, for an exclusive gallery appearance. We spoke with Trevor about his upcoming event and the story behind his artistic journey.

Q: Trevor, we're excited to welcome you to Austin! Can you tell us about your upcoming gallery appearance?

Trevor: Thank you—I’m really looking forward to it! The show is happening at [Gallery Name] on [Date], and I’ll be presenting a new series called “Urban Legends.” Austin is such a vibrant city with a deep artistic and musical heritage, so it feels like the perfect fit for these pieces. I’ll be there for an artist’s talk and meet-and-greet, and I’m hoping to connect with the local art community and music fans alike.

Q: What can visitors expect to see at the show?

Trevor: There are a lot of firsts in this exhibition. I’m debuting some larger-scale works that really push my style—lots of color, energy, and texture, all inspired by street art and the rhythm of city life. Of course, you’ll see some of my signature portraits—musicians who’ve shaped the soundtrack of generations. I love capturing their spirit and translating that intensity onto canvas.

Q: How did you become an artist? Has art always been part of your life?

Trevor: I’ve loved drawing since I was a kid, but growing up, I actually thought I’d end up playing music. Art and music go hand-in-hand for me—they’re both about self-expression and emotion. After high school, I started painting murals and working with spray paint, which got me hooked on urban and street art. Over time, painting became my main focus. I’m self-taught, so my style is really a blend of trial-and-error, inspiration from artists I admire, and a lot of late nights in the studio.

Q: Your style is so distinctive—what inspires your work?

Trevor: I’m fascinated by personalities who break the mold. Musicians, athletes, actors—they all have this larger-than-life presence that translates well to portraiture. My goal is to capture that raw energy, whether it’s Miles Davis, Prince, or a punk rocker. I’m inspired by city life, graffiti, and the layered textures you find on urban walls. Every painting is a mix of improvisation and control—like a great rock riff or a jazz solo.

Q: Any message you want to share with Austin art lovers ahead of your show?

Trevor: I’d just say: come by, hang out, and let’s talk art and music! I love hearing what people see in my work, and I’m excited to soak in Austin’s creative energy. See you at the gallery!
